Questions Answered

  • As a UI Design expert, what do you think of the design of Startups.com?

Haha, now that's an intriguing, if not dangerous question. My honest reply is that I think Startups.com is a great site and some aspects of the design I really like, but there are a few things that bug me. I'd prefer not to make those public, however, so please contact me via Siteshine if you would like more feedback. Thanks for asking! :)

  • What does a creative director do?

It depends on the industry. Wikipedia gives a broad overview (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_director), but in my case, I take on the responsibility of helping business owners and principles who usually don't have expertise in conceiving, designing, and promoting their Web site get where they need to go to be effective online. While a large part of that encompasses the "Web designer" hat, I like to look at things from a higher level and make sure all the moving parts are in place in their business to ensure their Web site can be successful (hence the term "director").

  • Do you think corporate structures are productive?

Hmm, that's a good question. I think structures can be extremely productive if they're good structures. I was part of a development team run under SCRUM principles and other agile techniques, and it worked very efficiently and without a lot of withering pressure from above. Bad structures can probably end up worse than little structure at all. I've been there too. :)

  • Do you tweet about your business or are things better kept to oneself?

It depends. I tweet about what I'm working on sometimes and what I've discovered in my work. Since I work as a Web designer on contract, I think anything confidential from a client's perspective must stay that way.
